They went away, leaving him alone.
Something puzzled him about the place; at first he could not think what it was.

Then he knew.

The smell of it was familiar to him.

He did not recognise the room, but the smell he did seem to recognise, though being weak and shaken he could not connect it with any particular house or locality.

Now there were voices in the passage, and he knew that he must be dreaming, for the only one that he could really hear sounded exactly like to that of old Mrs.Parsons.He smiled at the thought and shut his eyes.
