Everything was safe as yet, and the ground round being clear, and having a double-barrel gun and two pistols, I was not so very much frightened.

It is no use to say I was perfectly comfortable, because I wasn't.

A Frenchman writing this, would represent himself as smoking a cigar, and singing with the greatest nonchalance.

I did neither.
