And, a little sooner, rather than a little later--as might have been the case had he not left them together--the inevitable had come to pass.
Yes, through the agony of that conviction now brought home to him, a dogged resolve formed itself in his mind--the determination not to betray himself or her.

It beat upon him with insistent force.

Though his goddess must be dethroned from her shrine in his heart, she should not be cast down for a vulgar brute like Harris to gloat over her shame....
