He was supplied with a large sum of money, readily furnished in secret by the leading mercantile houses of the city.

These funds were successfully invested in gaining over the garrison, only one company holding firm for Treslong.

The rest, as that officer himself informed Don John, were ready at any moment "to take him by the throat." On the 1st of August, the day firmed upon in concert with the Governor and Greffier, he was, in fact, taken by the throat.

There was but a brief combat, the issue of which became accidentally doubtful in the city.

The white-plumed hat of De Bours had been struck from his head in the struggle, and had fallen into the foss.
