A few cypress pines grew upon the rocks in several places.

The day was decidedly hot; the thermometer stood at 100 degrees in the shade at three o'clock, and we had to fix up a cloth for an awning to get sufficient shade to sit under.

Our only intellectual occupation was the study of a small map of Australia, showing the routes of the Australian explorers.

How often we noted the facility with which other and more fortunate travellers dropped upon fine creeks and large rivers.

We could only envy them their good fortune, and hope the future had some prizes in store for us also.
