In the 8th century there was a further abridgment of the hieratic writing, which was called the demotic, or people's writing, and was used in commerce.

Whilst the hieroglyphic and hieratic writings laid the foundations of the old sacred dialect, the demotic letters were only used to write the spoken language of the people.
