It is worth while to quote a few passages:* (* Flinders' Papers.) "Not a large town; streets wide, ill-paved and irregular.

The houses of the principal inhabitants large; have little furniture, but are airy and pleasant, suitable to the climate.

Most of them have balconies, where the owners sit and enjoy the air.

Those of the lower classes ill-built, dirty, and almost without furniture.

In the square where the market is held, near the pier, is a tolerably elegant marble obelisk in honour of our Lady of Candelaria, the tutelar goddess of the place.
