As she was passing her uncle he put out his hand and detained her.
"I hope it was only a foolish girl's piece of nonsense," said he with an attempt at his wonted kindliness.

"And I know it won't occur again.

But when your aunt says things you won't like to hear, remember that you brought this on yourself and that she loves you as we all do and is thinking only of your good." "What is it, Uncle George ?" cried Susan, amazed.

"What have I done ?" Warham looked sternly grieved.
