He should expect her at the Ministry of the Interior soon after three o'clock.

She, his wife, might come with her if she liked, but she could not be present at the interview.

Jeanne's first movement on hearing this was an exclamation of refusal.

Donna Rosetta, however, had little difficulty in persuading her to change her mind.

She could not tell what projects her husband had in his mind, she did not know; but in her opinion it would be madness not to go, not to listen, because there could be no danger, and Jeanne need not commit herself in any way.
