Monsieur Madinier was reserving himself to give more effect to a surprise that he had in store.

He went straight to the "Kermesse" of Rubens; but still he said nothing.

He contented himself with directing the others' attention to the picture by a sprightly glance.

The ladies uttered faint cries the moment they brought their noses close to the painting.

Then, blushing deeply they turned away their heads.
