It was well for her that it should be so dark.

She never wanted to see the light again.
There was a footstep on the other side of the square, and she paused till it had passed away beyond the reach of her ears.

Then she came out from under the archway, and hurried across the square to the street which led to the bridge.

It was a dark gloomy lane, narrow, and composed of high buildings without entrances, the sides of barracks and old palaces.

From the windows above her head on the left, she heard the voices of soldiers.
