Captains Hutchinson and Wheeler were deputized to proceed to the appointed place.

With twenty mounted men and three Christian Indians as guides and interpreters they reached the appointed place, but no Indians were to be seen.

After a short consultation, they advanced a little further, when they found themselves in an ambuscade.

A volley of rifles and muskets was the first intimation of the presence of Indians.

Eight men and five horses fell dead, and Captain Hutchinson and two more were mortally wounded.
