The knowledge of his love had come on him like a sudden gust, and he only half realized what he had done.

He walked back to his lodgings, going over and over the amazing words, recalling with flushed astonishment the kiss.

Then a chilling doubt beset him suddenly.

Did Marion know how poor he was?
Never in his life had the fear of poverty or the desire of gain determined Hyacinth's plans.

He knew very well that no such considerations would have in any way affected his conduct towards Marion.
