He did not belie the hopes so enthusiastically expressed.

He had the good sense to renounce all pretensions to Friesland, the fertile source of many preceding quarrels and sacrifices.

He re-established the ancient commercial relations with England, to which country Maximilian had given mortal-offence by sustaining the imposture of Perkin Warbeck.

Philip also consulted the states-general on his projects of a double alliance between himself and his sister with the son and daughter of Ferdinand, king of Aragon, and Isabella, queen of Castile; and from this wise precaution the project soon became one of national partiality instead of private or personal interest.

In this manner complete harmony was established between the young prince and the inhabitants of the Netherlands.
