Some day perhaps you will follow the same route under conditions as happy as these are the reverse." I think she must have guessed to what I referred, for her face flushed a little, and she hastily diverted the conversation into another channel, by drawing my attention to a picturesque sailing-boat which at that moment was entering the harbour.

I tried to entice her back to the subject later, but she would plainly have none of it.

Only once did she refer to it, and that was when we were making our way back to the hotel to lunch.
