Some time ago, the laborers on a certain estate became dissatisfied with the wages they were receiving, and refused to work unless they were increased.

The manager tried in vain to reconcile his people to the grievance of which they complained, and then sent to Mr.
M., requesting him to visit the estate, and use his influence to persuade the negroes, most of whom belonged to his church, to work at the usual terms.

Mr.M.sent word to the manager that it was not his province, as minister, to interfere with the affairs of any estate; but he would talk with the people about it individually, when they came to 'speak.' Accordingly he spoke to each one, as he came, in a kind manner, advising him to return to his work, and live as formerly.
