When the apprenticeship system was first introduced, they did not fully comprehend its provisions, and as they had anticipated entire freedom, they were disappointed and dissatisfied.

But in a little while they became reconciled to the operations of the new system, and have since manifested a due subordination to the laws and authorities.

There is great desire manifested among them to purchase their freedom.

Not a week passes without a number of appraisements.

Those who have purchased their freedom have generally conducted well, and in many instances are laboring on the same estates on which they were slaves.
