This was the fat boy's occupation, and for it he received eight pounds a month and his travelling expenses.
His company consisted of seventy-five bipeds and one hundred and twenty-five quadrupeds.

Of the bipeds, twelve were performers, two being women; the pay varied from sixteen pounds a month to the chief Amazonian lady, down as low as five pounds a month to the least efficient of the corps.

They work all the year round, sucking their cents from the North in summer, and from the South in winter.

They carry everything with them, except it may be fuel and provisions.

Each has his special duty appointed.
