When he reflected that, by his delays, he had probably forfeited the affections of his mistress, his sensations amounted to agony.

It only remained, by his speedy departure, to repair, if possible, or prevent so intolerable an evil.

Already he had half resolved to embark in this very ship which, he was informed, would set out in a few weeks on her return.
Meanwhile he determined to make a new attempt to shake the resolution of Wieland.

The evening was somewhat advanced when he invited the latter to walk abroad with him.

The invitation was accepted, and they left Catharine, Louisa and me, to amuse ourselves by the best means in our power.
