Caesar ordered his men to make no reprisals, and broke off the conference.

The next day but one Ariovistus proposed a renewal; but Caesar refused, having decided to bring the quarrel to an issue.

Several days in succession he led out his legions from their camp, and offered battle; but Ariovistus remained within his lines.

Caesar then took the resolution of assailing the German camp.

At his approach, the Germans at length moved out from their intrenchments, arrayed by peoplets, and defiling in front of cars filled with their women, who implored them with tears not to deliver them in slavery to the Romans.
