I did not see the captain when he came in.

I only felt his grip on my right arm, as he seized it and snatched the horseshoe from me.

I did not hear what he said, though I heard him saying something.

When he caught both my hands, I threw myself down on the cowering Ace and tried to bite him.

When he lifted me up I kicked the prostrate Ace in the face as a parting remembrance.
When he stood me up in the corner of the stable and asked me what in hell I was doing, I broke away from him and threw myself on the staggering Ace with all the fury of a bulldog.
