I think he was pleased more than he cared to express.
"Very good, sir!" said he.

"As soon as it grows a little darker I shall be glad to have you walk up to my house.

As I said before, I am sure you would not care to do so now, as you might provoke remarks even from the servants.

Good-evening, sir, until I see you again." During all this time the young lady had not spoken, but as the two disappeared around the corner of the house I heard her voice.

She spoke very clearly and distinctly, and she said, "It would have been a great deal more gracious if you had asked him to come at once, without all that----" The rest of her remarks were lost to me.
The little man and his wife presently came out on the porch.
