72/83 The best book on the Appalachian South is Horace Kephart's _Our Southern Highlanders_ (1913). William Garrott Brown's _The Lower South in American History_ (1902) contains some interesting matter. Hammond's _The Cotton Industry_ (1897) and C.W. Poe's _Cotton, its Cultivation, Marketing, Manufacture, and the Problems of the Cotton World_ (1906). D.A.Tompkins, in _Cotton and Cotton Oil_ (1901), gives valuable material but is rather discursive. |
