Pfifer was in a good humor.

He went to get that twenty-five pounds of good, nice, fat tallow out of his knapsack, and on opening it, lo and behold! it was a rock that weighed about thirty pounds.

Pfifer was struck dumb with amazement.

He looked bewildered, yea, even silly.

I do not think he cursed, because he could not do the subject justice.
