The doctor had not heard from his people.

She was reasonably certain why.

They did not want her.
Thus, all her interest in life began to centre upon the patient, who was apparently quite as anchorless as she was.

Sometimes a whole morning would pass without Spurlock uttering a word beyond the request for a drink of water.

Again, he would ask a few questions, and Ruth would answer them.
