1.] This was either composed of scales set similarly to those of the rest of the cuirass, or of two, three, or more rows placed at right angles to the others.

The greater part of the arm was left without any protection.
A remarkable variety existed in the form and construction of the Assyrian shields.

The most imposing kind is that which has been termed the _gerrhon_, from its apparent resemblance to the Persian shield mentioned under that name by Herodotus.
