A little group of men with _pitos_ and _tambours_ strolled from place to place, playing.

Much selling was in progress in the booths, the chief articles offered being intoxicating drinks.

A cluster of drunken vocalists, sitting flat upon the ground, but almost unable to hold themselves upright, were singing horribly to untuned guitars.

In front of the town-house a bench had been dragged out by the authorities for the benefit of the _cura_, who, seated thereon, was watching the sports with maudlin gravity.

The _presidente_ and other officials were standing by the _padre_, and all were drinking at frequent intervals.
