In making the attempt, he received a fire which did immense execution.

The British occupied a thicket almost impervious to horse.

In attempting to force it, Lieutenant Stuart who commanded the leading section was badly wounded, his horse killed under him, and every man in his section killed or wounded.

Captain Watts, the second in command, fell pierced with two balls.

Colonel Washington was wounded, and his horse was killed.
