In the night, after crossing the Zeekoe River, we arrived at a Boer farm, to which (we are told) twenty English scouts had paid a visit shortly after sunset, and, having asked for information concerning us, had gone away by the same road we were following.
About four or five miles from there we had to cross a ridge.
It was dark, and I had forgotten those twenty English.
I had sent out no scouts before me, but rode, as was my habit, with my staff, in front of the commandos.
