He published a "Defense," in a small volume of about two hundred pages; embracing a history of the controversy from the beginning, and proving his teachings to be, as he affirmed, doctrines of the Greek Church.

This he did by freely quoting from Epiphanius, Chrysostom, Clemens, and others.

The book was sent to the most prominent men, civil and ecclesiastical, in Greece and Turkey, and produced a powerful impression.
