The guns were placed so as to command the approaches.

The horses were kept saddled, and ready for action.

Strong guards were placed, and the troops lay down in their armor.

Orders were dispatched, to the Tlascalans, to hold themselves ready to march into the city in the morning, and join the Spaniards.
As soon as daylight broke, the troops were under arms.

A portion of those, with the guns, were posted outside the building, so as to sweep the streets.
