I do not expect them to love us, and doubtless though they may flatter us to our faces, they curse us heartily behind our backs.

But we care nothing for their curses, or for their ill will, so long as they do not proceed to plots and conspiracies against us.
"They seem courteous and friendly, and I think that the Tlascalans have spoken far too strongly against them.

Nevertheless we will be on our guard.

These men are not like our mountain friends, who were rough fighters, but hearty and honest people.

They are traders, or nobles, or priests, accustomed to let their faces hide their thoughts, but through you we may get nearer to them than we otherwise should do.
