Some, like Sire d'Aulon and Don Alonzo, judged it well to stay at their post.

Others were ashamed to stand idle.

Hence haughty words and bravado.

Finally Don Alonzo and a man-at-arms, having challenged each other to see who would do the best, ran towards the bastion hand in hand.
