We must get into the neighbourhood before dark, so as to give the horses twelve hours' rest before we begin; for we may have to ride for it.
"It ain't likely.

Barker's is the nearest station, and it would be hours before they could get together men enough who would dare to follow us; but still, it's just as well to be prepared, and since that confounded new police officer has been on the station, there's never been no certainty about things.

We owe him one for that last affair, which cost Smith, Wilson, and Mulready their lives; but we will pay him out yet.

Who would have thought of his being there, just on that very night?
I swear, if I ever catch him, I will roast him alive." "He is no fool," one of the others said.

"He gave it those black fellows hot, and no mistake.
