He had good reason to know the fiendish malignity of the man and, in spite of the warnings he had given Kate Ellison, and his strict orders to the police on guard, he felt a thrill of anxiety, now that he was aware her enemy was still at large.
The prisoner was sitting up, in a corner of the hut; a policeman, with drawn sword, standing near him.
"Where is your leader ?" Reuben asked sternly.

"The man you call Fothergill." "He went away yesterday morning," the man said, with a grin of satisfaction.

"You haven't caught him yet; and you will hear more of him, before you do." "Where was he going ?" Reuben demanded.
"You won't get nothing out of me," the fellow said.
