[338] But scarcely had the new officebearers been sworn in when it was discovered that they were as unmanageable as their predecessors.

At Newcastle on Tyne the regulators appointed a Roman Catholic Mayor and Puritan Alderman.

No doubt was entertained that the municipal body, thus remodelled, would vote an address promising to support the king's measures.

The address, however, was negatived.
