There were even suppliants who made their way into the Stadthouse, flung themselves on their knees, described with tears and sobs the lamentable condition of those whom they most loved, and besought the intercession of the magistrates.

The pulpits resounded with invectives and lamentations.

The press poured forth heartrending narratives and stirring exhortations.

Avaux saw the whole danger.
